Tripura Violence
Since the 2018 elections, there
have been sporadic incidents of violence in Tripura, particularly between
supporters of the ruling BJP and the opposition parties, including the CPM. In
September 2019, clashes broke out between the BJP and the Indigenous People's
Front of Tripura (IPFT) during a rally organized by the IPFT, leading to
several injuries.
In November 2020, violence
erupted in the Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura district, where a mob
attacked and burnt down the houses of Bengali settlers, leading to the death of
at least one person and several injuries. The incident was attributed to
long-standing tensions between the indigenous people and the Bengali settlers.
In February 2022, there were
reports of clashes between supporters of the BJP and the CPM in the state,
leading to several injuries. The violence was reportedly triggered by a dispute
over a political rally organized by the CPM.
The Tripura government has been
taking measures to maintain law and order in the state and prevent incidents of
violence. However, the underlying socio-economic and political factors that
contribute to the tensions and conflicts in the state need to be addressed
through sustained efforts towards development and inclusive governance.
